Types of Editing

Editing is a multilevel process that encompasses big-picture issues such as plot and structure as well as every tiny detail down to the last comma. To decide which level of editing is right for you,

feel free to refer to this guide.

Beta Read

This service refers to an early read of a manuscript, and it can be helpful between an early draft and a subsequent rewrite. Many writers rely on friends and family for this feedback, but if you want a response that goes beyond “I love it and I love you” or “It's not what I usually read, so...,” you might consider this service. Feedback addresses questions such as: Does this manuscript work overall? Is it logical, compelling, and easy to understand? Are there places that rush or drag or seem out of place?

Developmental Editing

Book editor

This big-picture edit can serve as an early step if you’ve finished a draft and need editorial feedback. Feedback includes a report that addresses the larger issues of the manuscript such as character development, plot, structure, dialogue, setting, and the writing overall.

Line Editing

Line Editing

This level of editing focuses on the logic and flow of your sentences, paragraphs, and scenes. Good writing reads effortlessly, and with that in mind feedback addresses issues such as sentence structure, word choice, and scene structure. For example, unnecessary adjectives and adverbs get cut, clichés get replaced or disappear, dialogue gets streamlined, and verbs go from passive to active. Changes may be significant and involve reorganizing and rewriting, all done with your voice and vision in mind and intact.
